Each meticulously crafted piece captures the cyclical nature of our emotional landscapes, from moments of serene tranquility to turbulent chaos, highlighting the delicate balance and inherent resilience of the human experience. Join us in celebrating Young Shin's transformative artistry and the profound depths conveyed in this exhibition.
Artist's Biography
Young Shin makes abstract paintings with paper. Her work overall examines and explores aspects of ephemerality, unpredictability, and eventual acceptance as it relates to human experience. More precisely, embracing the idea that all things and beings change and evolve followed by the inevitable ending and simultaneous outcome of a new birth is very much at the core of her practice and intention. Whether the expression is manifested in heavily textured stripped lines, rigidly structured or fluidly aligned “grid-like” surfaces, or intensely sanded down geometric shapes “unearthed” from the bottom layer, the key to her visual articulation is in the process. In a nutshell, several layers of paper are glued together then the very layers are destroyed by stripping, sanding, or peeling in order to reveal what’s underneath. In the end, Young celebrates the tenuous and delicate beauty of life through limning the universal human experience of precarious impermanence and its ironic exchangeability with life onto a canvas by performing the acts of building, annihilating, and eventually, birthing and revealing anew.
About the Solo Exhibition
Theme of the exhibition is “Paper Sphere: Oscillation between Tranquility and Tumult.” It is an evocative exhibition that explores and delves into the spheres of human emotion through the delicate and
unique yet hardy medium: Paper. Paper · a material often perceived as fragile, and impermanent becomes a main material for expressing the complexity of our inner worlds in this body of work. Crafted
meticulously from different types of paper, this exhibition wanders the intricate and complicated terrain of human psyche, and fluid boundary between serenity and chaos that inherently exist from within.
The intention for this collection is in the essence of the cyclical nature of our emotional changes that encapsulate moments of serene tranquility and the chaotic turbulence that fast travels within the
mind. Each painting serves as a reminder of our inherent capacity for both tranquility and tumult, and the delicate balance that exists between the two, underscoring the fragility yet resilience of the
human experience.
The exhibition is divided into three distinct yet interrelated groups of collages. First group consists of collages that embody serenity and stillness. These pieces, made with layers of wispy sheets of
paper, embody soft hues, quiet abstract forms, serene textures, and fluid compositions, and subtle and balanced interplay between light and darkness delineate and resonates a sense of solace, calm, and
center.
Second group of collages represents transition. A shift in tone and mood that mirrors the mercurial nature of human emotion. This middle ground is where quietude begins to dissolve, giving way to
uncertainty and turbulence. The colors become more vivid, the textures more varied, layered, and the compositions more dynamic. These transitional pieces represent the ebb and flow of the mind, and the
intricate and inherent back and forth between calm and storm that reveal intensity that exists underbelly of what may appear to be peaceful on the surface.
The third group is where tumult resides. Here, the paper is molded into bold, dramatic forms from stripping the layers which in turn convey intense emotion and chaotic energy. The colors are striking and
the textures rugged, reflecting natural and unfiltered nature of turmoil. These works capture moments of emotional upheaval such as massive anger, fear, and even love · and the overwhelming force of these
emotions. The technique here becomes more aggressive, tearing, sanding, and layering the paper to create a visceral, tactile experience that immerses the viewers into the experience of disturbance.
