Art Yourself Atelier is pleased to present 『Meal.taphor』, a distinctive online solo exhibition showcasing the profound artistic innovation of Shiqi Xu, an ascending artist based in New York.
Artist's Biography
Shiqi Xu is a womenswear/couture designer based in New York New York. She loves to explore her own stories and emotions and analyze how social issues affect individual behavior to gain design inspiration. Her design language is romantic and poetic. She believes that designing a collection is like writing a poem - delicate, subtle, yet with a lingering aftertaste.
With experiences of living and studying in different countries, including London, New York, and Shanghai, Shiqi values the tradition and culture of her background in China. She likes to experiment with different materials and traditional crafts and convert them into modern fashion. As a graduate who received four consecutive years of dean's scholarship from Parsons School of Design with a BFA in Fashion Design, she has worked for top brands and designer brands, including Dior, Celine, and Mingma. These experiences have helped her cultivate a well-rounded understanding of the luxury fashion market in China and New York.
About the Solo Exhibition
Based on the shared meal system in China, the dining table is supposed to be the best place for reunion and communication, but most quarrels in their family actually happened at the dining table. During meals, their mom always gave them some outdated traditional women indoctrination. Articulating grievances directly made the conflicts worse. Hiding emotions and pretending everything was going well made the family relationship strained. How could they express themselves in a way that their mom would want to listen!
They sit in front of the round dining table and eat with round plates. The circle is the most preferred shape for the Chinese, because it is believed that the circle is a metaphor for happiness and reunion. Metaphor, an implicit figure of speech, is also preferred by the implicative Chinese. Without saying anything clearly, but everything is clear to the listener. Inspired by this concept, 'Meal.taphor', a collection of garments, textiles, accessories, and performance is created.
Objects around them during a meal were selected and transformed by silhouettes or fabric details. Each object is a metaphor for something, creating a new implicative narrative together. 'Meal.taphor' embraces new technologies (digital printing and laser cutting) and traditional techniques (printmaking, beading, etc...) to explore the relationship and the integration of two generations.
